Sometimes you need to find little moments of pleasure where and when you can. The other day I was riding in an elevator at the office and happened to describe one of our lawyers as “phlegmatic.” The secretaries riding with me hadn’t heard that word and asked me to define it. My definition met with great skepticism, and as each of the secretaries got off on their respective floors they hurried off to their desks to check its accuracy. By the time I got back to my office, I had two e-mails acknowledging that I had defined it correctly. One of the secretaries works for the attorney in question, went to his office to look up the word in this dictionary, and mentioned to him that I had used the word to describe him. She reported that after she gave him the news, the attorney — consistent with his phlegmatic nature — shrugged.
