The Best American Band: Honorable Mentions

There have been lots of fine American rock ‘n’ roll bands over the years, and it seems appropriate to at least mention some of the many groups that also have made (and in some cases are still making) some great music. My list would include The Band, Blondie, Bon Jovi, CAKE, Canned Heat, Chicago (at least, the early years), Concrete Blonde, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, CKY, Cracker, Devo, Doobie Brothers (at least, the early years), Fischerspooner, Grand Funk Railroad, Grateful Dead, Green Day, Huey Lewis and the News, J. Geils Band, Jefferson Airplane, Journey, Los Lobos, Lovin’ Spoonful, Nada Surf, Rare Earth, Rascals, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REO Speedwagon, Smashing Pumpkins, Spoon, Strokes, Steve Miller Band, Television, Three Dog Night, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Tommy James and the Shondells, Weezer, and Wilco.

Reading this list — which could include a bunch of other names, too — I am reminded of the novelty song Life Is A Rock (but the Radio Rolled Me) that was a minor hit when I was in high school:

Edited to add: Time to Vote for your choice for Best American Band!

Betty Lucks Out

Archie Andrews

Archie Andrews

According to this article, Archie Andrews has finally chosen between Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge, and has decided that Veronica will be his wedded wife. I’m not surprised, because Archie has always seemed somewhat stupid and shallow. He probably figured that Betty and Veronica look identical except for their hair color, but Veronica has lots of cash and Betty has none. In a way, Archie and Veronica kind of deserve each other: he gets a spoiled woman who can be a real shrew, and she gets a clumsy and dim-witted ginger with a tic-tac-toe game on the side of his head. Betty should consider herself lucky.
