One of my first blogs back on July 20th was about a woman, Shona Holmes who lives in Canada and supposedly had brain cancer. She could not get treatment quick enough in Canada where all treatment would have been free so she decided to come to the United States and get her treatment where she racked up $100,000 in medical bills. Shona and her husband had to take out a second mortgage on their house in order to pay the bills.
Republicans quickly picked up on her story to discredit the Canadian healthcare system and lend credit to ours. Here is a follow up article and some additional details regarding Shona’s situation. Mitch McConnell probably wasn’t aware of these details when using her situation as a “fear tactic” to scare Americans into staying with the status quo. Mrs Holmes has not released her medical records so its impossible to determine what doctors in Canada knew and what their thinking was regarding her treatment.
I found my brother’s follow up blog (September 28th, Healthcare Reform a No Brainer ) interesting where he pointed out that the President’s attempt to reform healthcare has lost alot of support in the past few months. That’s not surprising considering the amount of misinformation that’s been put out there by the “Grand Old Party”, i.e death panels and clinics in schools to perform abortions. We all know that whenever change is offered some amount of fear goes hand in hand with that change, but the rhetoric being used in most cases is flat out wrong.
So what is the “Grand Old Party’s” alternative ? What a surprise, they don’t have an alternative as this article points out and only 14% of Americans think that Republicans have clearly explained their position on this issue. It’s yet to be seen, but can the “Grand Old Party” beat something with nothing ? I’m hoping that the answer is NO !
