Going Viral – A Short Speech Worth Listening To

For those of us older folks the definition of going viral on the Internet means becoming extremely popular in a very short period of time and the following video has had more than 13 million hits. Back in 2009 the Iowa Supreme Court decided that gay marriage would be legal in the state, but earlier this year the Iowa House of Representatives now controlled by Republicans introduced an amendment to ban Gay Marriage and Civil Unions.

Zach Wahls this nineteen year old had the opportunity to speak in front of the Iowa House of Representatives back in January and spoke briefly about his family because you see Zach has two mothers. Although the Iowa House of Representatives passed the amendment the Iowa Senate decided not to take up the issue in essence killing the bill.

The speech speaks for itself. In my mind the well spoken words of a nineteen year old will hopefully make us realize that marriage should be between two people who love each other !

  1. Saw this yesterday! Agree with you, love doesn’t have a thing to do with gender. We have friends who are lesbian and have 3 adopted children, 2 boys and 1 girl. The boys are black and the little girl is white. The oldest boy is developmentally disabled, the other went to Harvard on full boat academic scholarship and is now teaching in Alabama. There is greater unity in that family than in many traditional ones and the kids are wonderful people because of the stable, loving, environment they grew up in. Great post Webby!

  2. Thanks for bringing this to light. I don’t believe I have ever heard such an articulate 19 year old. I hope all who have listened were enlightened.
As a life long Republican, I suggest that the noted fact that the Iowa Legislature is under the control of Republicans is of little relevance to Zach’s message. Unfortunately, prejudices and ignorance knows no party lines, particlarly this prejudice. Here in the south there are Obama supporters that believe that homosexuality is the work of the devil, a choice that can be solved by prayer. My guess would be that in Iowa there are many Democrats that also believe homosexuality is an (evil) choice. Not all Republicans are troglodytes and not all Democrats are Brahmins.
