When I was in high school, a big topic of discussion was: who was the huge hit song You’re So Vain about? I’d always understood that it was about Mick Jagger, who actually sang backup on the track.
Now Carly Simon has come out and disclosed that at least part of the song is about Warren Beatty. Warren Beatty? That’s kind of weird, for some reason; it seems like he would be too old. It sort of makes me lose some respect for Carly Simon, too — but at the same time, it’s easy to see Beatty as the colossal, egotistical jerk depicted in the song.
So, scratch one of the enduring mysteries about a popular song. Now if we could only find out the answers to some other musical mysteries. Like, who Stairway to Heaven is about, and who the ex-boyfriend was in Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know? And while we’re at it, what the heck did Billie Joe McAllister throw off the Tallahatchie Bridge in Ode to Billie Joe?
